Song of the Adirondacks

A sign post on the trail is read with care
It shows you on the map right where you are
The sign ends one leg and begins the next
It lets you know which way and just how far

To hike is to take many thousand steps
It takes just one stumble to smash your toe
The blue toenail takes three months to fall off
The new toenail takes seven months to grow

The sign post is a good place for a break
A pause to drink and eat a healthy snack
And contemplate the beauty of the trail
Before putting the pack back on your back

Close to the top you sense the end is near
Glancing ahead the trail often tricks you
A jutting rock with sky as its background
Could this be the apex? False peak, not true!
