Bike Riding

To run errands with a back pack and bike
Shifts mundane tasks to exploits that I like
It’s hard to beat a rider’s parking place
A car could never find a closer space
Despite a car’s convenience and comfort
Excessive use of cars makes me inert
When living in a city or suburb
It’s useful knowing how to hop a curb
The freedom bikes afford I understate
The fun, fulfilling ride will fascinate!

New York has bike sharing and safe bike lanes
A great alternative to cabs and trains
The nimble bike can weave past traffic jams
Like fleet sheepdogs corralling sluggish lambs
The bike shares in Paris and Montreal
Enhance their standing as a port of call
The Dutch in Amsterdam, they’re smart, they know
That bikes (not cars) are the best way to go
The freedom bikes afford I understate
The fun, fulfilling ride will fascinate!

I relish rigorous, reviving rides
On single track trails threading mountain sides
Big tree trunk that comes down and blocks the trail
Creates an obstacle I often fail
Attempting it imprints a sprocket mark
Atop the fallen tree trunk in the bark
And passing without putting my foot down
Is an accomplishment that brings renown
The freedom bikes afford I understate
The fun, fulfilling ride will fascinate!

Falls from the bike will seldom kill or maim
The bruises, cuts and scrapes are often tame
To pick the right gear is a worthwhile skill
Especially when you’re biking up a hill
The exercise is wholesome and decent
Restoring body and environment
To move from place to place spends energies
Instead of fossil fuels, burn calories
The freedom bikes afford I understate
The fun, fulfilling ride will fascinate!
